Green Day have gone from "Basket Case" to space case... in a way.

NASA's Insight Lander, which has now officially arrived on the "Red Planet" of Mars after traveling through space since May 5, bears a chip with the etching "Green Day Since 1986," which prompted the legendary punk rockers to declare on Twitter that they've "officially landed on Mars." A photo of the chip can be seen below.

"Today, we successfully landed on Mars for the eighth time in human history," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine (via CNN). "InSight will study the interior of Mars and will teach us valuable science as we prepare to send astronauts to the Moon and later to Mars. This accomplishment represents the ingenuity of America and our international partners, and it serves as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of our team. The best of NASA is yet to come, and it is coming soon."

The InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) Lander will spend two years on the planet's surface collecting data following its 301,223,981 mile journey through the cosmos. The lander also sent a picture of Mars back to NASA as seen below.
