We are going to give you all the info on how you can cut your very own Christmas tree for this holiday season. It is better to plan ahead on occasions like this and be prepared.

The first thing you need to know is that you must have a permit to cut your own Christmas tree. Permits vary per location. Right here in Northern Colorado your options are the Red Feather Lakes area and Grand County.

  • Permits are $10 per tree and are limited to 5 permits per person
  • Entry hours are 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Tree trunk size must be 6 inches or less
  • Handsaws only

Prohibited

  • Chainsaws
  • Snowmobiles, ATVs, Etc.
  • Cutting trees marked with blue paint
  • "Topping" trees
  • Trespassing on private property

When you are looking for a tree this holiday season, the forest service is asking you to look for a tree that is close to other trees to help thin out the forest. Make sure you have a capable vehicle (4 wheel drive), dress for winter conditions, heavy duty gloves, park out of the way of traffic and to bring extra food, water, a shovel, blankets and a first aid kit.

Your tree permit must be purchased in advance starting on November 1st for the Grand County locations. Cutting dates for Grand County are Dec 2nd - 9th. You can find more information HERE.

Cutting dates for Red Feather Lakes areas are Dec 2nd - 10th. More information on Red Feather Lakes cutting locations can be found HERE.

Make a day out of cutting a Christmas Tree down with the family and make some great memories!
