Billy Joel Has the #1 Song Every Long Islander Should Know- Which One?

The readers of Newsday Long Island have been voting on what are the top 100 songs that every Long Islander  Should Know.  It's not a HUGE surprise that Billy Joel- a Long Island native-  would land at the top of the list- with 5 others in the top 100. It's the one that landed at #1 that struck me by surprise!

Since June, the readers of Newsday/Long Island have been casting their votes for what are the top 100 ongs they think that every Long Islander should know.  The votes are in, and Billy Joel is on the chart six times.

See? That one took me by surprise- it's a great song- I love it- but #1 that all Long Islanders should know?

Billy explained the story to Newsday/Long Island:

I always considered myself an album artist. I don't think we built our success just on singles -- although we were lucky to have a lot of Top 40 singles -- we did have album cuts that people liked, like 'Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.' That ended up becoming a very important recording in my career. Towards the end of the night, that's one of the big finale songs. I don't think I could do a show without performing that song -- which is why I'm sick of it . . . [Laughs.] It's basically the story of Brenda and Eddie told through a meeting at an Italian restaurant during a dinner. It's something that a lot of Long Islanders do, kind of reminisce over Italian food. And everybody's got their Italian restaurant.

OK- I've never been to Long Island; obviously Mr. Joel know what they do there- and what songs they might like- Boom- #1.

Way to go Billy Joel!
